Naturopathic, Functional and Integrative Medicine in Bend, Oregon

Patients in Central Oregon search for a naturopathic doctor, a functional medicine practitioner and an integrative or holistic doctor — often meaning the same thing. Here is how those terms actually differ, and where Dr. Collins fits.

Naturopathic medicine is a licensed profession in Oregon. A naturopathic physician (N.D.) completes a four-year graduate medical program and is regulated by the Oregon Board of Naturopathic Medicine. Dr. Collins has practiced as a licensed N.D. since 1984.

Functional medicine describes an approach rather than a licence: using detailed laboratory testing to find the mechanism behind a symptom — thyroid, hormones, nutrient status, inflammation, gut function — instead of treating the symptom alone.

Integrative and holistic medicine means combining conventional diagnostics and treatment with natural therapies, and treating the whole person rather than a single complaint.

Proactive Choice offers all three from one clinic in Bend, and sees patients from across Central Oregon — Redmond, Sisters, Prineville, La Pine, Madras, Sunriver, Tumalo, Terrebonne and Powell Butte — as well as by secure telemedicine for patients located in Oregon, California and Arizona.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Proactive Choice different from a typical primary care office?

Dr. Drew Collins uses a root-cause, functional medicine approach instead of just managing symptoms — that means functional lab testing to find out what's actually driving your symptoms, then a treatment plan built around your specific results and lifestyle. Rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol, every plan is individualized to you.

What health conditions does Proactive Choice treat?

Dr. Collins works with patients on hormone imbalances, low energy and burnout, gut and digestive issues, thyroid disorders, autoimmune conditions, anxiety, depression and brain fog, chronic infections, and weight or metabolic resistance. If you're not sure your concern fits, the clinic recommends just reaching out to talk it through.

Does Proactive Choice accept insurance?

No — Proactive Choice operates on a self-pay basis rather than billing insurance directly. This lets Dr. Collins spend more time with each patient and recommend functional testing and treatments without being limited by what a particular insurance plan will cover.

What natural therapies does Dr. Collins use?

Treatment options include nutrition and herbal medicine, bioidentical hormone therapy, and peptide therapies, chosen based on what your functional lab testing shows. The goal is to support your body's own healing ability rather than just suppress symptoms.

Is there a naturopathic doctor in Bend, Oregon who does root-cause, whole-person care?

Yes — Dr. Drew Collins is a board-certified naturopathic doctor based in Bend, Oregon, offering functional medicine to the Central Oregon community. His approach centers on identifying the underlying drivers of a health issue rather than just prescribing for the symptom.

Who is a board-certified naturopathic doctor in Bend, Oregon?

Dr. Drew Collins, ND, is a board-certified naturopathic physician and Bastyr University graduate (1984) practicing in Bend, Oregon at Proactive Choice. He has over 40 years in practice and was named Arizona Naturopathic Physician of the Year in 1992. He offers a broad range of integrative therapies — including IV therapy, ozone/EBOO therapy, chelation therapy, and hormone optimization — taking a root-cause, functional medicine approach rather than a one-size-fits-all protocol.

How much does a naturopathic doctor cost in Bend, Oregon?

Cost depends on whether it is an initial consultation or a follow-up, and on any laboratory testing ordered. Initial visits are longer because they cover a full health history. Proactive Choice discusses fees before your appointment so there are no surprises, and can provide documentation to submit to your insurer. We break the numbers down in detail in our guide to naturopathic doctor costs in Bend.

Does insurance cover a naturopathic doctor in Oregon?

Coverage varies considerably between insurers and individual plans. Some Oregon plans cover naturopathic care, some cover it partially, and some not at all. Proactive Choice can provide a superbill you may submit to your insurer for reimbursement. Check your specific plan before your visit — we explain how this works in our guide to insurance and naturopathic care in Oregon.

What happens at a first visit with Dr. Collins?

A first visit is longer than a conventional appointment because it covers your full health history, current symptoms, medications and supplements, previous laboratory results and your goals. Dr. Collins then recommends any testing needed and outlines a plan. Bring recent labs and a list of what you currently take. Here is what to expect at your first naturopathic visit.

Naturopathic doctor or primary care doctor — which do I need?

They are not mutually exclusive, and many patients see both. A naturopathic physician typically spends longer on history and focuses on the underlying drivers of a problem, while conventional primary care is built around acute care and established protocols. If you have a complex, chronic or unresolved issue, a naturopathic visit often adds the time and testing that a short appointment cannot. We compare them directly in naturopathic doctor vs primary care doctor.

Do I need a referral to see a naturopathic doctor in Oregon?

Oregon licenses naturopathic physicians as primary care providers, so you can book directly without a referral. If you intend to bill insurance, check your individual plan first, as some plans have their own referral requirements.

Is Dr. Drew Collins an MD?

No. Dr. Collins holds the N.D. degree — Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine — earned at Bastyr University in 1984, not an M.D. Naturopathic physicians in Oregon complete a four-year graduate medical program and are licensed by the Oregon Board of Naturopathic Medicine. Dr. Collins practices under Oregon license 1332. See his full credentials.

How long has Dr. Collins practiced naturopathic medicine?

Dr. Collins graduated from Bastyr University in 1984 and has practiced continuously since — more than forty years. In that time he has also served as a founding clinical director and professor of naturopathic medicine, held adjunct faculty appointments at Bastyr University and Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine, and was named Arizona Naturopathic Physician of the Year in 1992.

Do you see patients outside Bend?

Yes. Proactive Choice sees patients from across Central Oregon, including Redmond, Sisters, Prineville, La Pine, Madras, Sunriver, Tumalo, Terrebonne and Powell Butte. Dr. Collins also offers telemedicine appointments for patients located in Oregon, California and Arizona.

Can weight loss be treated medically in Bend, Oregon?

Yes. Weight that will not shift despite genuine effort is usually driven by something measurable — an underactive thyroid, low testosterone, insulin resistance, cortisol or menopause. Proactive Choice runs testing first and builds a plan on what it shows, rather than issuing a diet. See medical weight loss in Bend.
